Terrorist attack in Québec - January 29th 2017 Event

Bathurst, Tuesday, January 31, 2017 - Members of MACR (Multicultural Association Chaleur Region) are saddened to learn the news of the shooting on Sunday, January 29 at the Islamic cultural center of Québec. Six victimes have fallen under a hail of bullets, and 19 other people were injured.

Our condolences go out particularly to the victims' families , but also to the Muslims living in our communities, as well as to all women and men of good will; we share our sorrow.

The president of the MACR, Mr. Euclide Chiasson stated in support of the Muslim community: `` We all know that such actions, which aims to terrorize and spread hatred, has nothing to do with our Acadian and Canadian values. We urge all Canadian men and women to react to any form of hate, xenophobic and Islamophobic speech. We stand for the right to freedom of expressions, but we also have a duty to denounce those who infringe on our freedom and who spread values contrary to human dignity and democracy. ``

Mr. Chiasson also added that: `` While a president of a neighboring country wants to build walls and prohibit access to Muslims, the MACR works towards building a society that is open to the world. In the Chaleur region, we love to celebrate human diversity . To all people who are from diverse origins, races or faiths, we offer a warm welcome amoung us! ``
